NRA F.I.R.S.T. Steps Pistol Orientation:

Description

F.I.R.S.T. stands for “Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training”, a program the NRA developed to meet the need for a firearms orientation program for new gun purchasers. This FIRST Steps program is a basic orientation course designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation of one specific firearm model, in this case the pistol.

Since FIRST Steps orientations are model specific, and teach only the most basic shooting skills, they are not complete "courses" in the traditional sense of the word.  They do provide a thorough introduction to firearm safety, handling and shooting skills.  These skills require regular practice.  Initially, this practice should take place under the supervision of a qualified individual -- like an NRA Certified Instructor.  For this reason, the orientation encourages participants to obtain additional training in the NRA Basic Pistol course.

Prerequisites:

Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must be legal to possess a handgun.

NRA Basic Pistol Course:

Description

Americans own pistols for a wide variety of reasons.  Some people own pistols for personal protection, others fire pistols in competitive shooting tournaments, as well as many hunters find handgun hunting to be a real challenge.   A new shooter will quickly discover that pistol shooting is definitely fun!  Shooting handguns requires good hand eye coordination, plus mental concentration and discipline.  The purpose of this class is to teach the safe and proper use of a pistol so that it can be used to the fullest extent.

Prerequisites:

Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must be legal to possess a handgun.

NRA Personal Protection in The Home:

Description

The NRA Personal Protection in the Home course exposes students to several schools of thought regarding defensive shooting techniques.  This course will cover mindset, legal issues, decision-making under pressure, and planning for the worst. The Basic Personal Protection in the Home course is designed around the use of the defensive pistol.

The personal protection series is based on the building block approach, moving from the simple to the complex.  The first course in the series is the NRA Basic Pistol Course, which develops in students the basic skills of handling, shooting, and cleaning the firearm.  The second course is NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home Course, which builds on the skills already learned in the previous course.

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook and intensive lessons on basics of defensive shooting, issues of self-defense, and other strategies for protecting the home and family.

NRA Range Safety Officer Course:

Description

This is a course designed to prepare experienced shooters to the basic duties of a Range Safety Officer (RSO). RSOs ensure that the users of a range follow range regulations in order to reduce property damage and personal injury. RSOs often have responsibilities to take action when circumstances require it. The RSO is the range's official on the firing line to ensure safety and to help shooters.

Many ranges seek out volunteer Range Safety Officers and the NRA developed this course to help ranges train those RSOs.

Becoming a Range Safety Officer is akin to becoming a NRA Certified Instructor, with much harder testing and the maintaining of a certification card with the NRA. A new RSO will need to pay $25 for processing of their card and $5 annually to maintain the certification. RSOs are neither certified instructors nor coaches.

Although the course can be completed as quickly as nine hours, it often will take longer depending on the class size and the facilities at the range. For example, a large number of indoor and outdoor ranges of different types cannot be toured quickly.

Students will receive a student packet featuring a RSO handbook. This handbook is not available separately.
